Horticulture professionals from across Northern England recently gathered at Thorp Perrow Arboretum to celebrate the Chartered Institute of Horticulture’s 40th anniversary. The anniversary was marked with a ceremonial tree planting at Thorp Perrow Arboretum. They planted a ‘Tai-haku’ cherry tree, symbolising growth, renewal, and the future of horticulture.

Planting for the Future: Honouring Heritage and Inspiring the Next Generation

Nothing says “happy anniversary” quite like planting a tree—especially at a 100-acre arboretum with five National Plant Collections. The chosen tree was the iconic ‘Tai-haku’ cherry, famous for its dazzling white blossoms. Once thought extinct in Japan, it thrives today thanks to horticulturists’ dedication.

Clive Parker, Northern Branch Chair, led the ceremony, sharing expert planting tips. He praised the participation of students from Askham Bryan College and apprentices from RHS Garden Harlow Carr. “It’s fantastic seeing the next generation joining the celebration,” Parker said. “This event showcases how horticulture careers shape landscapes and communities.”

From Saplings to Giants: Learning Tree Care and Planting Techniques

National Tree Week added extra meaning to the event. Students eagerly got their hands dirty, planting saplings using slit and notch techniques—essential for large-scale reforestation projects.

Curator Faith Douglas guided a tour of seasonal highlights, emphasising trees’ environmental and mental health benefits. “Trees support life in countless ways,” she noted. “It’s a pleasure to share this celebration with future horticulturists.”

The day wrapped up with a lecture by Adam Smith from Wykeham Mature Plants. His insights on tree selection for diverse planting scenarios resonated with attendees, especially as the UK’s tree-planting targets grow more ambitious.

Ben Rushworth, an RHS Harlow Carr apprentice, summed it up perfectly: “I learned so much today! Meeting industry professionals and gaining hands-on experience makes me excited for a career in horticulture.”
