The St. Martins flower show celebrated budding gardeners of all ages, with a special focus on young participants this year. Held on 17 August at the St. Martins Miners Institute, the event saw a vibrant turnout, especially in the children’s classes, which took center stage.

Paul Gurnett, chairman of the St. Martins Flower Show, expressed delight over the event’s success. “The emphasis this year was on the children’s classes,” he said. Local businesses generously donated seeds, compost, and materials for raised beds at St. Martin’s School to support the young participants. St. Martin’s Rainbows also received seeds and compost, helping nurture tomorrow’s gardeners.

Children competed in two age groups: up to seven years old and eight to 13 years old.

The adult competition was just as fierce, with Bryan Swain, Margaret O’Neill, Cody Clarke, and others taking top spots. Ann Sadler was crowned Best in Show, adding another victory for flowers and plants.

Outside, Harry Hamilton’s raptor stand, featuring live owls, captivated visitors, adding an educational touch. Claire Mulvey from the Shropshire Ornithological Society provided interactive wildlife activities engaging both children and adults alike.

Paul Gurnett thanked the Miners Institute, local businesses, and sponsors for their generous contributions, which made the event a blooming success.
