Garden Centre Sales Drop Amid Economic Pressures

© The Horticultural Trades Association

October 2024 has been a tough month for UK garden centres, with sales declining as the sector faces mounting economic pressures. According to the latest report from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), overall sales were down by 6% compared to last year, highlighting a challenging environment. However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel, as early Christmas sales show a positive trend.

Garden Centre Sales Drop: October Sales Fall by 6% Amid Weather and Economic Pressures

The slowdown in October sales is due to several factors. Unseasonably dull weather discouraged plant purchases. Bulb sales, an important part of autumn gardening, dropped by 6%. Core gardening categories also saw a significant decline of 14%. Economic pressures worsened the situation. Increases in National Insurance contributions and the National Living Wage added costs for garden centre businesses. As a result, over 60% of HTA members have raised prices to cover these higher expenses.

Christmas Sales Show Early Promise, Offering a Boost for Garden Centres

Despite the setbacks in October, there is some hope for the sector. Early Christmas sales have been encouraging, up 5% compared to the same month in 2023. This could be a sign that shoppers are starting to spread out their festive spending, driven by economic uncertainty. In addition, garden centre cafés and restaurants have experienced a 4% increase in transactions, offering vital support during the quieter months ahead. These early festive sales are crucial for garden centres, helping to maintain cash flow as they prepare for the next gardening season.

Overall, while the October figures reflect tough conditions for UK garden centres, the early signs of Christmas sales bring a sense of optimism. As businesses navigate through these challenging times, the holiday season offers a much-needed opportunity for recovery.
