Organised by the Chartered Institute of Horticulture, this annual event celebrates the brightest young minds in the UK and Ireland’s horticulture scene. Whether you’re a student, apprentice, or industry professional, this is your chance to prove your knowledge and connect with experts.
Round 1 for entry opened on 1st February 2025, with an online process accessible via the institute’s website and social media channels. If you’re under 30 by 31st July 2025, you’re eligible to compete.
Compete for Prestige and a £2,500 Bursary
Winning the title of Young Horticulturist of the Year is more than just an achievement—it’s a career-defining moment. The champion will receive a £2,500 travel bursary, funded by The Percy Thrower Trust and the Shropshire Horticultural Society.
This prize allows the winner to travel anywhere in the world to study, gain work experience, or visit renowned horticultural sites. Past winners have explored botanical gardens, attended exclusive workshops, and worked alongside global experts.
The competition will challenge participants on everything from plant science and landscape design to environmental sustainability. It’s a golden opportunity to showcase expertise and gain recognition within the industry.
Grand Final Set at Historic Hillsborough Castle
The Grand Final takes place on 10th May 2025 at Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, Northern Ireland. This stunning venue, home to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, has played a major role in history, including hosting Good Friday Agreement talks.
Beyond the castle’s regal heritage, the gardens date back to the 1760s, featuring a mix of formal designs, woodlands, and meadows. Contestants will not only compete in a prestigious setting but also enjoy an expenses-paid trip to this iconic royal estate.
The National Organiser expressed excitement, saying, “This year’s entrants are lucky! They get a shot at a major prize and a visit to an exceptional Royal venue.”
