The Dutch Senate has shown strong support for climate-conscious agriculture and horticulture. A majority of political parties, including CDA, BBB, GL-PvdA, D66, CU, and OPNL, have called for €5 billion from the Climate Fund to be allocated for sustainable measures in the sector. This ensures financial backing for farmers and horticulturalists to meet climate goals. The proposal is expected to pass in the next voting on 18th February.

Unlocking Climate Funds

The agricultural sector has long been excluded from the Climate Fund, despite playing a vital role in sustainability. LTO (Dutch Agricultural and Horticultural Organisation) has repeatedly urged policymakers to open the fund to farmers and horticulturists. Now, with Senate backing, the industry is set to receive long-awaited support. This move is crucial, as the Scientific Climate Council (WKR) emphasized last autumn that farmers are essential to achieving climate targets. However, current policies fall short in helping them transition to sustainable practices. By unlocking the Climate Fund, the Netherlands can ensure agriculture contributes effectively to the country’s 2030 climate goals.

LTO stresses the need for a structured, long-term approach. The organization proposes a Climate-Conscious Agriculture and Horticulture Agreement, which will:

  • Establish clear objectives for 2050.
  • Provide a stable investment climate for farmers and horticulturalists.
  • Allow businesses ample time to implement sustainable measures.

To make the most of the €5 billion, an Implementation Program for Climate-Conscious Agriculture and Horticulture is also necessary. This program will define concrete actions at the company, regional, and sector levels. Additionally, it will offer a clear framework for the climate transition of agriculture and horticulture up to 2030 and beyond.

LTO urges Ministers Hermans and Wiersma to act swiftly in finalizing the covenant and implementation program. With decisive action, the allocated funds can be utilized effectively, securing a greener future for Dutch agriculture and horticulture.
