Colombia’s Petal Plan is at the heart of the country’s thriving floriculture industry, ensuring the seamless export of fresh flowers to international markets. With millions of blooms destined for global celebrations, the Petal Plan guarantees efficient logistics, strict quality control, and timely deliveries.
Petal Plan’s Strict Control and Optimised Distribution
Designed to streamline the journey from farm to florist, Petal Plan coordinates efforts between key institutions like the Colombian Agricultural Institute (CAI), the National Police, and transport authorities. Their collaboration ensures cargo security and smooth logistics while preventing illegal activities. The result is flowers reach global markets in excellent condition. This is crucial for Valentine’s Day when demand for Colombian flowers surges.
According to Augusto Solano, CEO of Asocolflores, (a flower company in Columbia) “To meet market demands during peak seasons, our Petal Plan fosters collaboration between producers, authorities, and logistics providers. This has earned national and international recognition for streamlining exports.”
The Global Reach of Colombian Flowers through Petal Plan
Colombia’s flower industry has a worldwide impact. During the 2024 Valentine’s season, exports reached 59,000 tons, a 13% increase from the previous year. Most (92%) traveled by air from major airports like El Dorado in Bogotá and José María Córdova in Rionegro. The remaining 8% shipped by sea from ports in Santa Marta, Cartagena, and Barranquilla.
Red roses led exports (19%), followed by carnations (16%), chrysanthemums (13%), hydrangeas (7%), and alstroemerias (6%). With over 60 flower species, Colombia remains a top global supplier.
The United States imported 76% of the shipments. Other key markets included the United Kingdom (5%), Canada (3%), the Netherlands (3%), and Japan (3%), with Colombian flowers reaching over 100 countries.
Strategic promotions have fueled Colombia’s international success. Organisations like Pro Colombia boost global recognition through business meetings, trade shows, and marketing. These efforts have expanded Colombia’s reach, making its flowers a top choice for florists and consumers.
As the 2025 Valentine’s season nears, Colombia strengthens its position as a leading flower exporter. With the Petal Plan ensuring efficiency and quality, Colombian flowers will again brighten celebrations worldwide.
