CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus hosted its 14th Opportunities in Horticulture careers fair, giving students a glimpse into a thriving industry. With over 30 employers, expert speakers, and hands-on career advice, the event highlighted how horticulture is shaping the future. From sustainability to mental health benefits, industry leaders shared insights on why now is the best time to enter this growing sector.

A Growing Industry

The UK’s horticulture sector is more than just growing plants. It plays a key role in sustainability, climate action, and even mental well-being.

David Dowd, acting head of horticulture at CAFRE, described the industry as full of opportunities. He noted that horticulture helps feed the nation, supports biodiversity, and combats climate change. “It’s an exciting time for anyone thinking about a career in this field,” he said.

This year’s fair also marked the 40th anniversary of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture. With decades of progress behind it, the industry is pushing forward with innovation, sustainability, and new job opportunities.

Leading Employers Offer Career Insights

More than 30 exhibitors attended the careers fair, connecting students with potential employers. Businesses from various horticulture sectors offered internships, placements, and graduate roles.

Attendees also gained insights from key industry figures. Speakers included:

  • Fionnuala McAuley, chair of the Institute of Flowers
  • David Wilson, director of marketing at Overdevest Nurseries
  • David Richardson, president of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture

Students engaged in a lively panel discussion about career paths, extracurricular activities, and industry trends. After the talks, they explored the exhibition hall, speaking directly with companies about future job opportunities.

CAFRE lecturer Caithriona McCrudden praised the event’s success. She thanked the speakers, employers, and students for their enthusiasm. “Their participation made this an inspiring day for our future horticulture professionals,” she said.

CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus offers courses from Level 2 to BSc degrees in horticulture. The next open day takes place on March 26.
