The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) hosted its annual Plants in Parliament event, showcasing UK-grown plants while addressing sector challenges. Around 60 MPs, peers, and staff engaged with industry leaders to discuss key policies affecting the horticulture sector. The event came at a critical time, just after the budget announcement and before debates on peat-free horticulture.
UK Parliament Showcases the Vital Role of Environmental Horticulture
UK-grown plants took centre stage at the event, illustrating the industry’s economic and environmental contributions. HTA representatives and members shared insights on how horticulture supports growth across various sectors, including trade, health, and the environment.
The event highlighted the extensive reach of horticulture, with HTA members operating in 567 UK constituencies. Participants included Jonathan Whittemore of Johnsons Nurseries and Peter McDermott of You Garden Limited. They discussed the need for government support to unlock the sector’s £40bn potential by 2030.
Fran Barnes, HTA’s Chief Executive, emphasised the sector’s ability to deliver on environmental goals while boosting health and well-being. She noted that businesses are facing rising costs, regulatory changes, and the transition to a peat-free future. These challenges, combined with tight margins and border issues, make government backing essential.
Plants in Parliament Event: Policymakers Urged to Support Horticulture Amid Economic and Environmental Challenges
The event provided a platform for Parliamentarians to hear directly from industry stakeholders about policy impacts on UK horticulture. With most horticultural businesses being SMEs or family-owned, the sector requires targeted support to remain competitive.
Ben Goldsborough, MP for South Norfolk, praised the industry’s contribution to local landscapes and the economy. He stressed the importance of exploring ways to sustain the sector for future generations.
