The Environmental Horticulture Group (EHG) has unveiled two groundbreaking reports outlining the substantial economic and environmental contributions of the horticulture sector. With the potential to grow to £51.2 billion by 2030, these reports highlight how green spaces and horticulture can drive sustainable growth in the UK economy. Minister Daniel Zeichner MP welcomed the findings, emphasizing the sector’s role in fostering economic resilience, climate mitigation, and public health. The findings are especially timely, as the UK government explores strategies for boosting green economic growth and workforce development in response to the climate crisis.

Economic Impact and Job Creation from Environmental Horticulture

In 2023, the horticulture sector contributed £38 billion to the UK economy and supported over 722,000 jobs. This diverse sector includes gardening, landscaping, arboriculture, and green space management. By 2030, the industry could grow by 45%, adding 41,000 jobs and reaching a value of £51.2 billion. This growth will depend on strong government support. The EHG has urged policymakers to collaborate on strategies that drive green economic growth and workforce development. Key industries, such as landscaping and arboriculture, will play a crucial role in achieving this expansion.

Environmental and Health Benefits of Green Spaces

Urban green spaces have proven essential for improving air quality, reducing pollution, and mitigating climate impacts. In 2021, their pollution-reducing and cooling effects were valued at £27.4 billion, while also saving £800.5 million in health-related costs. These spaces, along with public parks and gardens, continue to contribute significantly to public health and wellbeing, aligning with the EHG’s vision for a “Neighbourhood Health Service.” Studies show that access to green spaces promotes physical and mental wellbeing, reduces stress, and helps alleviate chronic conditions. The EHG emphasizes that horticulture is key to improving health outcomes while advancing sustainability goals. Green spaces are essential in supporting biodiversity and helping the UK meet its climate resilience and net zero targets.
