The 2024 WorldSkills UK National Finals, hosted by the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), showcased the next generation of landscaping talent. Held from 18-22 November, this prestigious event celebrated skill, precision, and dedication. Young landscapers from across the UK competed fiercely to earn the title of WSUK Landscaping Champion 2024.

APL WorldSkills UK: Gold Winners Alan Myers and Harry Fitzsimmons Lead the Charge

The top honours at this year’s competition went to Alan Myers and Harry Fitzsimmons, both from the College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise (CAFRE). They were awarded the joint Gold after impressing judges with their outstanding landscaping skills. Also, Archie Matthews from Myerscough College secured Silver, while Luke Donald from CAFRE earned Bronze.

The competition wasn’t easy. Contestants faced the challenge of designing and building a 12m² garden in just 16.5 hours. They had to include complex elements such as paving, decking, and a water feature. With tolerances as fine as 3mm, the challenge tested both technical ability and time management. The event demonstrated the high level of expertise required in the landscaping industry and the passion of the participants.

Foundation Skills: Horticulture Competition Spotlights Future Talent

Alongside the main competition, the APL also hosted the Foundation Skills: Horticulture competition. This event was specifically designed to highlight the achievements of students with learning disabilities. Ross Muller from Pembrokeshire College took home the Gold, with Russell Reeves and Kieran Walsh earning Silver and Bronze, respectively.

Participants created beautiful winter-themed planting beds. Their work demonstrated not only their technical skills but also their growing independence. The competition was sponsored by Bents Garden Centre, which shows its commitment to fostering talent in the horticulture sector. The event highlighted the importance of inclusivity within the industry and gave participants the opportunity to shine.

Phil Tremayne, APL General Manager, expressed pride in the competitors’ achievements. “These events celebrate the creativity and resilience of young professionals in our sector,” he said. As the APL looks ahead to 2025, the focus will be on nurturing more talent, with next year’s event set to take place in Cardiff.
