British expertise is spearheading a horticultural revolution in New York State. Empire State Greenhouses (ESG) has partnered with Edinburgh-based Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS) to build a cutting-edge GigaFarm in Cobleskill. This ambitious project promises sustainability, innovation, and local impact, setting a new benchmark for modern farming.
GigaFarm Plans a Vertical Farming Revolution
The GigaFarm blends advanced technology and sustainability. It will feature 100 vertical farming Growth Towers designed by IGS. These towers can produce over three million kilos of fresh produce annually.
What sets this farm apart is its circular approach. Renewable energy sources power the facility, including solar panels and biogas digesters. It also integrates Food-Energy-Waste (FEW) systems to cut energy costs by a third. This efficient system ensures minimal waste and maximum productivity.
The GigaFarm’s water efficiency is equally remarkable, using 98% less water compared to traditional farms. This project addresses growing global demands for eco-friendly food production by focusing on sustainability and resource efficiency.
Local Impact: Jobs, Education, and Fresh Produce
Beyond innovation, the GigaFarm delivers a local boost. It’s expected to create 185 full-time jobs and over 400 indirect roles. SUNY Cobleskill, a nearby agricultural college, will also benefit from this. Students will gain hands-on experience through internships and research opportunities.
The farm’s location ensures fresh produce reaches consumers quickly. Growing up to 50 crop varieties reduces food miles while meeting diverse consumer needs. This makes it a game-changer for Cobleskill residents and the surrounding communities.
