Established in 1949, this family-owned business has a rich history that reflects a deep commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Originally focused on growing vegetables like tomatoes, Noordam Colourful Flowers transitioned in 2008 to specialize in the cultivation of cut hydrangeas. Today, the company is renowned for producing some of the most exquisite hydrangeas in the world, with two varieties standing out as true stars: the Blue Mammoth and the Cassanova.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Noordam Colourful Flowers is more than just a business; it’s a family legacy. For over seven decades, the Noordam family has poured their heart and soul into every aspect of their work. This dedication is evident in their small-scale approach to hydrangea cultivation, where the focus is on producing flowers of the highest possible quality rather than sheer quantity. The company grows nine distinct varieties of cut hydrangeas, each one carefully tended to by the owners themselves. With no additional staff, every step of the process—from planting to harvesting—is a labor of love carried out by the Noordam family.
The Mammoth Blue: A True Giant Among Hydrangeas
Among the hydrangeas grown at Noordam Colourful Flowers, this variety is particularly awe-inspiring. As its name suggests, the Mammoth Blue boasts some of the largest flowers and thickest branches in the collection. This hydrangea is known for its impressive size and sturdiness, traits that evoke the grandeur of the ancient elephant species it’s named after. The Mammoth’s bold, robust blooms make it a perfect choice for those seeking a dramatic and eye-catching addition to their floral arrangements.

The Cassanova: A New Breed of Elegance
In contrast to the Mammoth’s imposing presence, the Cassanova variety brings a touch of romance and refinement to the Noordam collection. Introduced through the Ko Kolk hydrangea breeding program, the Cassanova is one of the newest varieties on the market. What sets this hydrangea apart is its unique lavender-like color—a hue that has only recently been introduced in cut hydrangea cultivation. This soft, delicate shade of lavender adds a layer of sophistication and beauty to any bouquet, making the Cassanova a favorite among floral enthusiasts.

Mastering the Art of Hydrangea Care
To fully enjoy the beauty of Noordam Colourful Flowers’ hydrangeas, proper care is essential. With the right attention to detail, these blooms can have a vase life of up to two weeks.
Start by placing the hydrangeas in a clean glass vase, ensuring that it is thoroughly washed—preferably with chlorine—to eliminate any bacteria. Fill the vase with fresh water and add cut flower food to provide the necessary nutrients for the flowers.
When preparing the flowers, cut the hydrangea branches diagonally. This allows for better water absorption, helping the blooms stay hydrated and vibrant. Position the vase away from direct sunlight and drafts, as these elements can cause the flowers to wilt prematurely.
If the hydrangeas begin to go limp, they can often be revived with a simple trick. Replace the water in the vase with warm water, trim a small piece off the ends of the branches, and place them back in the vase. This method frequently brings limp hydrangeas back to life, allowing them to continue shining for days to come.
